This is the second post in the series on transformation which is the theme I’m reflecting upon during the month of May. Last time, I shared an introduction to this topic and a bit about the sanctification process as we are transformed from glory to glory.
My journaling is in 100 Days of Bible Promises, reflecting on the promise of a new heart in Jesus Christ and the resulting joy.

The promise of a new heart
The devotional for this day is about the promise we have in God to make our hearts new. Shanna writes that when we turn to Jesus Christ, confess, and turn from the ways of the world that we were walking in, His forgiveness wipes the slate clean and brings us a lightness and joy.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9
To confess means to acknowledge. So, here, it means to agree with God that we were wrong. He then not only forgives us, but also helps us to turn from the old ways and to walk in the His true way.
This isn’t something that we can do without faith in Jesus Christ or the presence of His Holy Spirit in our hearts.
We see, in Ezekiel 36:26, that God made a promise. He said “I will give you a new heart… I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”
In Jeremiah 31: 33, He said “I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”
This new heart He gives us is not longer hard and cold, but soft and warm.
No longer is it an unbelieving and rebellious heart but one of faith and obedience. It is a heart that can be shaped and molded. A heart with fertile soil in which His truth can be planted and watered to grow, flourish, and bear fruit.
A joyful heart
I’ve seen God do this in my own life. I used to be a very negative, critical, and cynical person. In my defence, I thought I was simply being honest and realistic. However, I was also prone to complaining which is a behaviour shaped by my childhood. Then, God revealed to me that it is only the powerless who complains; a child of God will pray as instructed.
He taught me how to lament then how to live confidently by faith, knowing and believing that He is for me as His word says.
He did that through suffering. He placed me in a lot of situations that were very uncomfortable. Situations where I could not escape and where I had to turn to Him for help. In the process He transformed my heart from complaining to rejoicing.
2 Corinthians 6:10 says that “we are sorrowful, yet always rejoicing”. In Philippians, we are instructed to rejoice always and make our requests known to God with thanksgiving.
Affliction drives us to God where we receive His comfort. Psalm 16 tells us that joy is found in His presence. Isaiah 61:1-3 tell us that He turns our sorrow into joy for his glory. Romans 8:17-18 remind us that if we share in His suffering, we will share in His glory.
[we are] fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us
Romans 8:17-18
Suffering prepares us to rule with Christ. It grows our character and gives us compassion to help others who are also suffering. This is all so amazing and our response should be thanksgiving!
Colossians 3:15-16 says “let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
I encourage you to offer your heart to God, as it is, in all its brokenness. He will transform it. He will shape and mold it. He will nourish it to make it fertile and fruitful. In the process you will be healed; you will be restored the person He created you to be. He did it for me, so I know He can do it for you.
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me… he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to grant to those who mourn in Zion — to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.
Isaiah 61:1-3

🎶 Flowers ~ Phil Wickham
Praise the One who loved me first
And gave me grace I don’t deserve
Now flowers spring up from the barren dirt
Hallelujah
Praise the One who heard my cry
And raised me up and saved my life
For all my days with everything inside
Hallelujah
I give You my heart
Fully Yours, set apart
This is all You’ve ever wanted from the start
God, I give You my heart
Our heart belongs to no one but God.
Made for Him, we will not be content until it is returned to Him.
Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
Proverbs 4:23
