Be still and know that He is God.
I’m learning to be still; to let go and see the majesty of God revealed in my life. I talked about cultivating the habit of being still in order to listen and hear from God in a recent post here: Be still and listen.
I’ve since started the Still devotional by Illustrated Faith, which is based on Psalm 46, and I’m sharing what I’m learning as I journal over on YouTube. Here is an introduction of sorts.
One encouragement we can takeaway from Psalm 46 is that we have very good reason to live a peace-filled life, no matter what we face.
Our God is our refuge and our strength; He gives us the courage to be still. He is our shelter; a place of safety that protects us from danger. Even when it feels like the world around us is falling apart, we can be without fear. We don’t have to be overrun by anxiety but, instead, we can be at peace and have joy even in that chaos. And, we can do this for several reasons.
1. He is present in the chaos with us.
Our fortress is not a place that we run to when life gets tough, but a place in which we dwell.
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Psalm 46:1-3
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling.
2. God is for us.
He helps us and the help that He provides is exceedingly great.
Come, behold the works of the Lord,
Psalm 46:8-9
how he has brought desolations on the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the chariots with fire.
3. God has a plan.
He has a plan to redeem the world. And, He also has a very specific plan for each of our lives.
“Be still, and know that I am God.
Psalm 46:10-11
I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
